The Highlights of the World Series of Poker in the 1990s

Known to be an enticing, attractive and most famous international event in the history of poker, the world series of Poker is very prestigious that many poker players are willing to travel thousands of miles just to visit and participate at this event. The tournament features events wherein different kinds of poker are played like stud, razz and Omaha. The buy-ins in each event differs with each other so players should be wise in deciding which event to participate. In addition, there are also high stakes and low stakes events in the World Series of Poker so participants should know which game they will succeed.

The World Series of Poker is an annual event so it is important that players explore the highlights in each decade that the tournament has been held in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the starting decade of the World Series of Poker, which is the 1970s, the tournament already attracted the attention of poker players, but, the improvements in this tournament is widely observed in the 1980s. Television coverage of the event started in the 1980s yet many changes still happen in the 1990s.

If we have a closer look at the historical events at the World Series of Poker in the 1980s, we can see that the decade ended in the death of Benny Binion, the poker player who organized and introduced the tournament. Hence, the following decade is welcomed with the leadership of Binion's son, Jack Binion, on the World Series of Poker. Binion lead the World Series of Poker in the 1990s along with poker experts Jack McClelland and Jim Albrecht.

Aside from the change in the leadership at the World Series of Poker, one of the highlights of the tournament in the 1990s is when Mansour Matloubi, an Iranian poker player won the championship or the main event in the 1990 World Series of Poker. The popularity of the tournament continued until in 1997 when the Horseshoe casino does not have enough space to accommodate the thousands of poker players who participate in the event.

Like how the second decade of the World Series of Poker, the third decade of the tournament also closed with the death of one of the outstanding and renown poker player, Stu Ungar. After winning three poker championships at the event, sadly, his career ended when he died during the latter part of the decade.

The explosion of the World Series of Poker never stopped in the 1990s, but it is still observed when the year 2000 entered. Hence, an increase in the statistics of participants at the World Series of Poker is observed at the years after the 1990s. Moreover, players are encouraged to explore the improvements that are made at the tournament at the World Series of Poker from 2000 to 2007.
